EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
