Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question specific rulings from the official, following the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
